Europe ↔ UK: Which Passport to Show
Sometimes it's hard to remember which passport one has to show as a dual UK & EU passport holder.
So here's a quick cheat-sheet on the protocol, using the example route BCN > LGW > BCN
BCN ↔ LGW: Which Passport to Show
For a UK & EU dual citizen travelling Barcelona ⇄ London Gatwick.
Barcelona → London Gatwick
- Airline check-in / Security (BCN): UK passport (proves entry to UK)
- Exit border control (BCN): EU passport (Schengen exit as EU citizen)
- Arrival UK border (LGW): UK passport (use e-gates)
London Gatwick → Barcelona
- Airline check-in / Security (LGW): EU passport (proves entry to Spain/Schengen)
- Arrival border (BCN): EU passport (Schengen entry as EU citizen, use e-gates no queues, no hassle)
Golden rule
- Enter/leave each country with the passport that gives you automatic right of entry (UK in the UK, EU in Schengen).
- At airline check-in, show the passport that proves you can enter your destination.
